One of this festival’s symbol is part of the work of sculptor Gonzalo González. The sculpture focuses on the expressive and symbolic possibilities vegetal elements. Its name is Brote (Bud) and since 2009 is the award that awarded directors receive in this film event.
This year, ‘Brote’ is photographed by Efrain Pinto and designed by Mojo Estudio.
Gonzalo González is one of the Canarian creators with a most consolidated trajectory and within his generation, the most internationally. Painting, drawing and sculpture are the disciplines which has devoted more attention.
He is creator of a powerful work, inserted in the vanguard that emerged from great European romantic lineage.
Landscape, vegetal forms, architectures or sky are in the middle of a work characterized by a huge technical competence and a rare ability to question about the true nature of reality in dialogue with different visual languages.
He has exhibited in many art galleries in the Canary Islands, Iberian Peninsula, Europe and America. First class cultural institutions have his works in their collections.
Brote Canarias Award
This Puerto de la Cruz garden was created in the 18th century. Today, it is a true scientific institution. It was conceived as a space in the Canary Islands in which to gather exotic plants from other countries, with the added advantage of being brought closer to Europe. Ledrú, Le Gros, Humboldt and Berthelot are just some of the illustrious visitors who strolled among the courtyards of this storied site which has been declared a Cultural Interest Heritage within the historic garden category.
Brote Photography Award
Chus Recio’s photographic career includes, among other things, the development of several photography projects, workshops and conferences. She’s also had several solo exhibitions and collaborated with different media and NGOs. She embarked on her first photography project five years ago.
Artistic Brote Award
The purpose of Artimalia is to provide information about extinct animals, presenting it in an original and creative way in order to inform, disseminate, and stimulate collective awareness around the loss of biodiversity. They are able to offer a panoramic view of the planet through the animals that once inhabited it and whose story is not so different from the current reality of many species.
Brote Environmental Activism Award
María Josefina Caal Xol is a Mayan Q’echi’ leader in Guatemala. She is an environmental activist who has fought to defend the Cahabón and Oxec rivers, despite political and business pressures. Her training of indigenous women for the protection of indigenous peoples and their territories should also be highlighted. She is a bilingual primary school teacher.
Brote Comunicación Award
María García de la Fuente is a journalist that specializes in the environment and sciences, a historian, and has been the president of the APIA (Asociación de Periodistas de Información Ambiental, the Association of Environmental Information Journalists) since 2019. She has been active in environmental journalism since she started working with Europa Press twenty-two years ago. She was part of the team that founded the newspaper Público and has worked in the press office of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs.
Young Sprout Award
Laura Reboul is a climate activist and environmental issues communicator who is committed to raising awareness and carrying out actions to mitigate the ecosocial crisis in which we find ourselves. She graduated in Environmental Sciences and is studying a Master in Agro-environmental Sciences. She is an environmental educator in the Heliconia cooperative and the National Volunteer Representative for Greenpeace Spain. She advocates combating the climate emergency with education and community action, but without forgetting the value and power of individual action.
Special Brote Award
An elite mountain athlete, Beatriz Flamini made headlines around the world after completing a voluntary 500-day stay, in complete isolation and at a depth of 70 meters, in a cave in Granada. Experimental psychology and behavioral physiology teams from the University of Granada and specialists in clinical neuropsychology from the University of Almeria participated in this initiative, meant to test her physical and mental strength.

Nature and photography have always been part of Pedro Javier Pascual’s life since his childhood.
He learnt everything on his own, reading all the information about photography that he found.
Pascual considers nature the main place of mystery, calm, ephemeral magic, physic beauty, a
chance meeting, nature is his most valuable inspiration and his playtime place.
Brote Award for Arts
A hardworking woman who never gives up and always evolves, who is capable of touching one’s
feelings with her works. Her personal philosophy is behind her techniques with recycled fabrics, as
well as her manual and handmade designing processes which she selects to turn her models into
real elements.
Canarias Brote Award
A non-profit association of the Canary Islands which promotes the restoring and maintenance of
the traditional varieties of the land in the Canary Islands. They want to push the local consumption
and also the knowledge of the crops around highlighting their nutritional and flavor qualities. They
also provide the sector with ecological seeds.
Brote Award for Communication
Journalist. She directs and presents the tv program Agrosfera in La 2 (Radio Televisión Española).
Since 2012 she has driven this program about farms, fishing and livestock in Spain. She deals with
all the institutional news which arises not only on the national space but also in the international
field, especially those related to Brussels.
Brote Award for Environmental Activism
Ati Quigua is an indigenous activist, environmental politician and pacifist from Colombia who
belongs to the Arhuaco people. She is also a public administrator and Master in Government and
Public Policy. January 3rd 2004 she became the first indigenous councilwoman in Colombia and
later on the first indigenous woman at the vice presidency of the Colombian Council from 2004 to
2011. Along her political career she focused on the creation of a “water culture” through the
establishment of a water statute in Bogotá and the protection of the environmental heritage, the
nutritional sovereignty and the woman protagonism within this fight.
Premio Brote Activismo Medioambiental 2019
Patricia Gualinga Montalvo es líder histórica del Pueblo Originario Kichwa de Sarayaku, en la Amazonia de Ecuador y actual presidenta de la Fundacion de Derechos Humanos TIAM. Fue protagonista principal del Caso Sarayaku y del triunfo de su pueblo contra empresas internacionales de explotación petrolera.
Premio Brote Artístico 2019
Elizabeth Monoian es la codirectora y fundadora, junto a Robert Ferry, de Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI). Un proyecto que lidera la conversación global sobre la estética de las energías renovables. Monoian, gracias a la creatividad, desarrolla acciones globales con entidades privadas y públicas sobre cuestiones relacionadas con el clima y la sostenibilidad.

Isabel Díez es una fotógrafa de naturaleza especializada en el paisaje y sus abstracciones, e investigadora en ecología marina. Los lados artísticos y analíticos de su personalidad han florecido en simbiosis para dar un cuerpo de trabajo que representa el mundo natural a través de imágenes líricas y sugerentes.

Periodista especializada en Medio Ambiente de la agencia Europa Press. Ha recibido diversos galardones por su labor periodística en el ámbito medioambiental. Entre ellos, el Premio de la Energía 2010, Distinción de la Dirección General de Protección Civil, por la cobertura del Simulacro de Emergencia Nuclear Europea (CURIEX) en 2014 en Cáceres o el Premio Recyclia en la categoría ‘Mejor Labor de un Periodista a la Difusión del Reciclaje’, en diciembre de 2017.
