MAGIC MEMORY, MIRROR MEMORY

We are committed to the search for the magic of memory. This is a memory explained and shared through audiovisual art and documentary cinema, which has led to a creative memory that stimulates and impels us all, a beacon of modest intensity that saves us from losing our way in these days of dark discourse. It points towards personal commitment, towards investigating the past to find explanations and discover new paths for our present. To do this and to understand something about this confusing present and the future it leads us towards is why the project and experience of Memoria Mágica (Magic Memory) was born.

For years, this initiative has been documenting the testimonies of a generation that does not wish for its words to fall through the dark cracks of history, and what is worse, into silence and indifference. This is a heritage that every day becomes more valuable and exists thanks to the generous donation of countless testimonies. This is our elders’ ancestral wisdom, their values of respect and solidarity as well as their commitment to the common good.

This wealth of feelings and knowledge that are channelled from the past towards the shores of the present, through conversations between grandparents and grandchildren, thanks to the sensitive and receptive souls of our young students and teachers at the IES Garachico – Alcalde Lorenzo Dorta. This is a gift from past lives that gives meaning to the present for all those of us who look towards the fountain of memory. Said fountain never ceases to remind us that, in spite of many challenges, the feeling of living in joy with what little we had always prevailed. And this is so because, above all, people were nurtured by the hope brought by wanting to grow and improve. This, life has never taken away from them.

These are testimonies and ways of life in which we can see ourselves reflected and compare the various paths of this battered world in which we find ourselves. We are in times of crisis in values, and of bleak expectations that are weighing on the world. We see crisis and a lack of respectable role models. And here we have the mirrors supplied by clear, fresh, and authentic eyes. These may serve as magical aid for us all.

GARACHICO DOCUMENTARY

GARACHICO, CABALGATA DE MÁGICAS ILUSIONES

Aborda el origen o la leyenda de la Virgen de los Reyes en Garachico, en el contexto trágico de la erupción del volcán de Trevejo (1706). Una tradición que arranca con el repique de las campanas de la ermita de los Reyes y la ceremonia de la cabalgata a lomos de camellos de los Reyes Magos para encender la noche de las ilusiones incandescentes de los garachiquenses de todas las edades. Las comidas tradicionales, las papas, el pescado, los chochos y los ñames. Una tradición, de las más longevas de Canarias, que pervive año tras año, gracias al entusiasmo imperecedero de sus protagonistas Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar y el empuje, cada vez más renovado, de los jóvenes que se van sumando a este acontecimiento tan esperado y con tantas ansias de futuro.
