bernegal

The term bernegal refers to two kinds of traditional vessels in Canarian culture: the first is a cup with a wide and slightly undulated mouthpiece that is typically used for drinking. The other is a stout mid-sized clay jar used in the distillation process to hold the water once it has been filtered.

Within Canary Island pottery, the bernegal is a typical piece, handcrafted by women potters. Its appearance varies from island to island and from one production center to another, resulting in a range of shapes and ornaments. Taking inspiration from this symbol of convergence, the musical project BERNEGAL brings together different musical traditions to generate new variations. From these various disciplines it creates a space of convergence and symbiosis from which a pure and fresh sound is born.

This event, which will take place in Icod de los Vinos, is run by the Ben-Gara Cultural Association, the Garachico Musical Group and the El Amparo Association of Tajaraste. Their respective musical directors are Felipe Baute, Antonio Gutiérrez and Marta Socas Pimentel. Carlos González is the dance director for Ben-Gara and the featured contemporary dancers are Borja Carballo and Lucía Álvarez.
